Headed To The Semi Finals: Baylor 42 MUS 16 - Baylor School (2024)

Caleb Hampton Scores Two TDs As Red Raiders Improve To 9-2

The Baylor Red Raiders had a bye in the first round of the TSSAA football playoffs last Friday, so they may have been a bit rusty at the start of this week's game with Memphis University School.

But once they got the kinks out and settled down, it was all Baylor as they advanced to the D-II-AAA semifinals with an impressive 42-16 victory.

Baylor improves to 9-2 while the Owls finish at 8-4.

Baylor coach Erik Kimrey didn't seem to be too bothered by the slow start.

"We sputtered at times as we were playing a good football team tonight, but we also responded when we needed to and got a great team win," the first-year head coach said near midfield following the quarterfinal-round game.

"We did exactly what we needed to do and we're just two wins away, but I was also proud of our defense as we did a good job of shutting them down. We finally got our offense going and we'll probably have to play our best game to win next week," he added.

MUS coach Bobby Alston didn't make any excuses for his team's most lopsided defeat of the season.

"We knew coming in that we'd have our hands full, but they're just more talented than we are," he said matter of factly.

"We got the fumble following our touchdown and it may have been a key if we could have scored, but we just weren't able to get any momentum going. We just didn't have the horses tonight," he added.

Both teams punted twice to start the game, but Baylor was able to put the ball in the end zone on its third possession after a touchdown was called back on their first.

Quarterback Will Muschamp, who misfired on his first four passes, hooked up with senior Evan Haynie for a 59-yard TD pass with 5:15 left in the first quarter.

Cooper Keown then booted the first of six straight extra points and the Red Raiders were on the move.

A 30-yard run by Caleb Hampton on the final play of the first quarter was Baylor's second TD and the lead was 14-0 starting the second stanza.

The Owls had punted on their first four possessions, but they finally got untracked and scored their only touchdown of the game with 6:01 in the second following an eight-yard keeper by backup quarterback Brady Hughes.

Jeremiah Tisdell recovered a Baylor fumble on the following kickoff and the Owls had great field position at the Baylor 47, but three straight running plays netted two yards and MUS was forced to punt again.

Hampton added his second TD on a 40-yard run with 1:55 left before halftime and the Red Raiders tacked on another on an 11-yard run by Muschamp with 21 seconds following a bad snap on an MUS punt that traveled only nine yards.

MUS had its best drive of the game to start the second half when they marched 55 yards in 13 plays, but a bad snap resulted in a 10-yard loss and the Owls were forced to settle for a 39-yard field goal by Andrew Tancredi.

Baylor finished the game with a touchdown in each of the final two quarters for the final 26-point margin of victory while MUS scored on a keeper from the one by Hughes on the final play of the game.

Baylor finished the game with 406 total yards, including 244 on the ground and another 162 through the air.

Hampton was the leading rusher with 154 yards on 19 carries while Muschamp added 43 on eight trips.

Freshman Decoda Davenport gained 37 yards on four carries late, including a six-yard run with 5:23 to play that concluded the scoring.

Amari Jefferson was the leading receiver for Baylor with five grabs for 80 yards while Haynie had the 59-yarder for his only catch.

MUS countered with 225 total yards and all were on the ground.

Hughes was the leader with 141 yards on 21 carries while Tyler Perry added 75 yards on 23 attempts.
