Do I understand correctly that you're looking for an NC for under 10K?

Read through the FAQ on www.miata.net -- there's a whole section there as to what to look for / at on a used Miata.

If you're looking for the NB or NC (2nd or 3rd gen Miata) for 10k$, expect it to be a crashed car needing about 6-10k$ in repairs. :)

As others have said, there is no chance to get an $10k NC at all. I saw more than a few NB ads from Craigslist, so you might want to try that. Another place to look is http://vancouvermiatas.com .

If you live in Greater Vancouver, your car needs to pass AirCare. You might want to refer to http://www.aircare.ca for details.

what about NA?

MXHDROOM

5th November 2008, 21:45

NA is the first generation Miata (1989 - 1998, or technically '97 I guess). NB is the second generation (1999 - 2005) and NC is third generation from 2006 -present. You'll hear some call them Mk I, II, and III as well.

FWIW, I'm partial to NBs :D .

Just keep looking at all those different sources provided to you by the other posters. Don't buy the first one you drive, although you'll probably want to. Drive a bunch of them, have your top pick checked out by a reputable shop which knows Miatas and make your decision based on sound research.

I'm not sure about the BC AirCare program, but it is no doubt similar to our Drive Clean program here in Ontario (now that we're a "have-not" province, I'd rather not have Drive Clean, thanks very much). It depends on the year of the car and when your re-registration comes due here. My registration is due next year and so is my Drive Clean test. From what other owners have told me, the main culprit leading to failures is the cat, which only makes sense. However, how you prepare your car for the test can have a bearing on the outcome. Check out your provincial requirements online; they will probably have tips on passing the test on there as well. In Ontario, we can also check online when the last time a car underwent a test by submitting the VIN. It's a good way to see if there were any problems in the past with something you're thinking of buying.

All this to say, don't let an AirCare requirement stop you from buying the car of your choice. If you research enough and buy the right car, it should be a no-brainer.

Good luck!

Gary

I just did a quick search on http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca using "miata" as the keyword, and included a $500 minimum price, and a $10k price cap. No less than 104 entries came back from the search engine.

I think it is pretty safe to say that you'll have lots of choices in Vancouver. :)

Also, I wouldn't let AirCare be a concern at all. As long as the car isn't burning oil and has a functional cat, it's really kind of difficult for the car to not pass AirCare. And if the car is burning oil or has a dead cat / no cat, why would you even want it in the first place?

Sounds like a disaster:

Mechanic has just diagnosed a potential manufacturer's engine defect - still driveable. Engine needs replacement. Warranty expired.
Why would you ever want to get into this mess?

Right off, I'd pass unless I could get a four to five thousand dollar discount. I would want that much for my trouble to replace the engine. And even at that, I think there's value to having a trouble free Miata for your first model. I bought one with coil pack issues (w/o knowing, of course), and it was frustrating to have issues with a new to you sportscar!

Before you buy any Miata get it checked over by someone who is familiar with Miatas. One of the most knowledgeable shops in the Vancouver area is http://www.eunos.ca/
Give Chris a call.

I found mine through the Vancouver craigslist. I still check it out from time to time. You can get an NA for under $10K easily. The NB asking prices are usually over $10K, but if it is older or with higher mileage, you might be able to get it for less.

Here is a '99 NB for $7,800 in Langley:

It would be so easy to go over your $10K budget. Stick to it, and hook up with the Miata club(s) in your area real quick. There's a wealth of info and help available from the folks in the clubs

FWIW,

My 91 Miata passed AirCare in July. The results were actually better than most new cars which amazed both the testing facility and myself. Wouldn't hesitate to buy a "super clean" NA. Mine is/was "mint" and stock except for suspension upgrades and a FM exhaust.

They are entirely different beasts. You really need to drive each one for a bit (not a quick test drive) to see the difference. I have owned a 1991 BRG, 2002 SE, 2006 GT, and now have a 2008 PRHT. They are all great and each has it's strengths and weaknesses. NA is a go-kart in terms of fun but very basic and underpowered. NB is a step up but not my favorite body style. NC is more refined and offers decent power. Although it's still not a race car, the extra hp goes a long way in terms of "enthusiast" driving. Suspension is a bit soft and can benefit greatly from upgrades. PRHT offers more security and is my favorite when it has the Appearance Package installed. Nice thing is they all allow you into the Miata owners group and there is a price point selection for everyone. Not to mention aftermarket parts galore for all three generations.
